a really validating experience as an artist is when you come across an artist that absolutely fuckin BLEW YOUR MIND in the past, decades or years or months ago
i’m talking like I QUIT THIS PERSON IS TOO GOOD I CAN’T EVEN COMPREHEND HOW THIS IS MADE
and you look at their work again from a different place and maybe they’re still miles and miles ahead of you, maybe not, but now it’s doable
i don’t know how common this experience is though, i feel like it should be? but it’s a really nice way to mark progress tbh
This has happened to me.
My tastes have also changed so artists that blew me away in the early ‘00’s don’t really do anything for me now. They’re still good but I can’t relate to the subject matter anymore. This has happened with me and most concept art.
Some artists that I looked up to a decade ago haven’t changed at all skill-wise, and it’s kind of disappointing. There are a few people I’ve surpassed completely at this point.
The best thing though is when people you looked up to a few years ago start watching your art, or *GASP* become friends with you!
